(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
I never was a huge PC gamer back in the early days of video games. I usually stuck to my consoles. But, I’ve always loved ASCII artwork. There’s something about creating beautiful visuals out of just text that amazes me. AFK Wizard is a “MUD” (multi-use dungeon) with modern mechanics that was created by Mechanist Games. It’s kind of an idle RPG with a bit of gameplay to it. You move around the map in real-time, so it’s up to you exactly how you want to play. On the other hand, fighting is done automatically and the game keeps playing when you’re gone. It’s a unique mixture of gameplay that took me a few to get used to. AFK Wizard relies heavily on stats and there’s tons of things to tweak and upgrade. So, I was a bit overwhelmed at first. Once you get the hang of things, the game really starts to open up. AFK Wizard will be a trip down memory lane for a lot of people, but unfortunately it won’t be for everyone. Regardless, I’ve been having a lot of fun with it so far.
AFK Wizard is also in this week’s iOS Roundup!
