(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
They’re Coming: Zombie Defense is a pixel art roguelike that recently released on the App Store by indie developer Wai Kin Ng. This is one of those games that I didn’t expect much out of, but ended up playing it nonstop. They’re Coming is pretty much your standard tower defense style game. You have to fight off waves of zombies before they break down your barriers or kill you before. What I really liked about this game was that you could upgrade/buy all sorts of new weapons and traps in between levels, but only up to 3 different items. That actually ads a bit of strategy to the game. It’s either upgrade your character or save for the next set of waves and hope for the best. My one gripe about They’re Coming are the mechanics. I’ve never been a fan of permadeath though. Once you die in this game, that’s it. You have to completely start over from scratch. I would have liked some sort of progression system that boiled over into future runs. It’s not all bad though. The stuff you unlock in the game stays unlocked in Playground Mode. This is a mode where you can practice different weapon combos, tweak the AI, and a bunch of other cool stuff. All in all, They’re Coming was a pleasant surprise for me. The game may be a little rough around the edges at times, but it’s still worthy of your time.
