(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Kingdom of Arcadia is a side-scrolling action platformer that was recently released on the App Store by Spoonbox Studio. You play as Sam, a gamer who gets sucked into his dad’s old arcade cabinet and ends up in Arcadia. The object is to find your way out and into the real world. Cool story aside, Kingdom of Arcadia is a solid Metroidvania game. Everything is pretty basic for the most part. You make your way through each level while fighting off baddies and collecting loot. Then you can use that loot to purchase armor and upgrade your weapons. There’s a bit of mild exploring if you’re looking to 3-star every level or are just looking for some extra coinage. The controls are simple with just a couple arrows to move left or right and an A and B button to attack and jump. I will say that the buttons are a bit small for my liking. I would’ve liked the ability to adjust them. I also would’ve liked some variety in enemies to fight. Regardless, Kingdom of Arcadia is still a solid game and I’m happy to see it finally come to mobile. The story is well done and the pixel art visuals are nice and chunky. If you’re a fan of these retro style side-scrollers, Kingdom of Arcadia won’t disappoint.
