(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Retro Abyss is a level-based fighting game by Big.Ben Game Studio. The game released on the App Store back in October of last year and I completely overlooked reviewing it. (My bad!) In Retro Abyss, you take on the role of a knight or archer (to start) as you go level by level defeating bosses. It’s a simple “boss fight” concept with a fairly unique art style and fighting mechanic. Each level has you up against a different boss with their own arena and set of attacks. The on-screen directional buttons feel pretty tight as they help you float around obstacles for the right moment to strike. After each level, you’ll earn currency and different buffs to help you out along your way. Currency can be used to upgrade your health and 3 different skills/attacks. I’ve had a lot of fun with Retro Abyss so far. It’s a bit on the short side, but since launch, the developer has updated the game with a ton of new content and special events. You can get through the game for free, but unlocking the full game for $0.99 will give you 3 new classes and a bunch of coins. If you somehow missed this one, definitely give Retro Abyss a try!
