(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Phobium is an action-RPG by Mike Twomey that was released on the App Store way back at the end of 2018. The game is a unique mashup of a few different genres. At Phobia’s core, it’s an arcade pinball-style game. Then sprinkle in some wave based attacking and a pinch of RPG mechanics and you have yourself a spicy meatball! Wait, what are we talking about again? Oh yea. Phobia has you slingshotting power pucks at enemies as they drop down from the screen ala Space Invaders. Each puck has a cooldown meter, so you’ll need to strategize a little instead of flinging pucks all willy-nilly. As you progress, you’ll earn XP to level up/purchase new pucks, upgrade your abilities, and change up your loadout. You’ll also be able to unlock and find new Lusions (buffs) to use during future runs. Phobium may be a little old in “mobile game years”, but it still holds up today. It’s fast paced, challenging, and a lot of fun. If you somehow missed this one back in the day, Phobium is definitely worth checking out!
