Roto Force is a 2D bullethell-style action game by Accidentally Awesome that was recently released on the App Store by Plug in Digital. In this game you take on the control of a lizard or some sort of little slime guy (I’m still trying to figure it out) as you take on waves of baddies, bosses, and mini-bosses. What makes Roto Force unique is its playing field. Everything is set within its own enclosed ecosystem. So, as you’re battling enemies, you can only stay within the borders. The concept is fresh and adds a bit of strategy to an already chaotic sub-genre of shooters. The dual-stick controls for Roto Force work well, but do take some getting used to. The right joystick aims your weapon as the left stick controls your movement and dashing. It took me a couple runs to really get comfortable with things. I’ve been having a blast-blast with Roto Force so far. The level and character design are really unique and the pixel art visuals are gorgeous. The free-to-try demo is a great idea too, but doesn’t show the full potential of the game. The first couple of levels are pretty bare with only a couple different weapons. As you progress, you’ll unlock more which changes things up drastically. All in all Roto Force is a really solid game. It’s not super long with only 9 different areas. But each area with its own unique theme, boss, and mini-bosses can take quite a while to complete depending on your skill. So, if you’re looking for a unique bullethell-style shooter, Roto Force is definitely worth unlocking the full game.
