(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Temporal War is a card collecting strategy game and the most recent title that was released on the App Store by Game Stew. It’s a simple concept about a futuristic war between red vs blue units. Now, I’ll be the first to say that I’m a Game Stew “Stan” (is that what the kids are still saying?) I love just about every game put out by this studio. But for some reason, I’m just not feeling Temporal War. Now, I absolutely love the art style and the whole futuristic war theme is really cool too. But, as far as gameplay goes, it’s very confusing and takes quite a while before things start picking up . At first, I thought that I just wasn’t understanding the mechanics. I read over the tutorial several times, sunk a good hour and a half of playtime and was still confused! Battles are completely random, new cards that you purchase are random. So in the early stages of the game, the only bit of strategy that you have is choosing your 12 card load out prior to a battle. As you progress, you’ll unlock and purchase more cards adding a bit more strategy with picking your cards out. This is when the game starts to shine. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike Temporal War. It’s definitely a solid card battling game. There are 50 different units and almost 400 cards to collect. The game just takes way too long before it finally starts getting good. This is one of the first times where I’m honestly on the fence on whether you should buy this game or not. I’d say that if you’re a hardcore strategy/CCG fan, Temporal War is definitely worth picking up. It’s deep, it’s fun, but it’ll take you a little while to get there. If you’re more of a casual fan, but like Game Stew’s other games, just know that this one is a bit different from the rest of their library.
