(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Doomdepths is a turn-based roguelike by Kacper Jankowski that was recently released on the App Store. In this game you take on the role of an unnamed hero as you battle your way through dungeons while trying to stay alive as long as possible. Doomdepths is a title that has a lot going for it and a lot against it at the same time. The gameplay loop is a lot of fun with runs being randomly generated to keep things fresh. The turn-based battles are quick, but involve a lot of strategy if you want to stay alive. As you progress, you’ll unlock permanent abilities and upgrades to make your future runs a little easier. There is a lot to love about Doomdepths. It’s charming, deep, and there are a ton of items to unlock. My biggest gripe is the resource system. You need resources to upgrade buildings or unlock talents in the Town Hall. Resources are randomly collected during your runs and are really scarce. A single upgrade could cost you over 100 resources and you’re only getting a couple resources per run. And most upgrades need a couple different resources to unlock. Resource balancing aside, Doomdepths is still a pretty fun game. If you can get past the grind, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Doomdepths is also in this week’s SNAPP Roundup!
