(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Raider is a dual-stick shooter that was recently released on the App Store by new developer Amir Lari. In this game you play as a fighter pilot as you try to stop the evil BeamGen Corporation from taking over the galaxy. Raider is a fast paced shooter that takes some time getting used to. The shooting is fine, but controlling your ship takes a lot of practice and a gentle touch. I ended up turning the control sensitivity all the way down and still felt like movement was too fast at times. Once I got used to things, I had a lot of fun making my way through caverns, dodging missiles and taking down enemy ships. Each run is different than the last, so it’s all about skill when playing this game. During each run, you’ll pick up weapon upgrades and power-ups to help you get further along. But, once you die, you lose everything. Raider is a really cool game once you get used to its speed. The visuals are well done and the overall theme is really cool. Unfortunately, there’s not much to it outside of a high-score chaser. There’s no permanent upgrades, no ships to unlock, not even leaderboards to see how you fare against other players. If you added some sort of progression, this game would be a big contender in the shooter genre. But, as it is now, I can see a lot of players getting bored after a handful of runs. The developer did an excellent job with Raider. It just needed a little more for me.
