(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Match & Rogue is a pixel art roguelike that was recently released on the App Store. The game is kind of a mixture of a matching game and a traditional roguelike. (Hence the game’s title). You move room to room while clearing out enemies by swiping and matching 4 or more of the same items on the bottom of the screen. I’ll be honest. I almost skipped over this game originally. I’ve played quite a few of these kinds of games, so I expected it to pretty much be the same. Luckily, I gave Match & Rogue a chance. As far as gameplay goes, it’s pretty standard. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see how deep the roguelike mechanics are. There is a pretty big skill tree to unlock with tons of items and collectibles to find. Not to mention, there are tons of weird activities you run across during each run. Everything from fishing and mining, to little shops to trade and buy items. I’m glad I decided to go through last week’s SNAPP Roundup. Match & Rogue is a really solid roguelike. If you’re a fan of these kinds of games, definitely check this one out.
