(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Daft Trek is a side-scrolling pixel art shmup that was recently released on the App Store by developer Retrosperic Studios. The game takes place in a distant future where a rogue AI is planning on destroying earth. You play as a fighter pilot trying to stop that plan. Daft Trek is a pretty solid shooter with a decent amount of content. You spend a lot of your time shooting down asteroids and defeating enemies regardless of the mission. The pixel art is really well done with some cool looking bosses and enemies. As you progress, you’ll pick up blueprints and resources that you can use to build new weapons and items. Daft Trek is far from perfect though. The screen size is a bit off on the iPhone with the game using more of a 3:2 aspect ratio. I also found the button size a bit small for my fat, but handsome thumbs. I would’ve liked to have seen a size option for the button mapping. These are pretty minor considering they could both be fixed with a quick update. Either way, Daft Trek is an all around good shooter. If you’re a fan of shmups and can get past its minor issues, this game is definitely worth picking up.
