(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Guncho is a turn-based tactical roguelike and the newest game by Arnold Rauers to hit the App Store. In this Western-style game you play as Guncho. A lone gun-slinger that is out to take on all bandits. Each run has you taking on bandits on a hex-based game board. You take turns making moves similar to most turn-based games. What makes Guncho unique is its shooting mechanic. Everything is based off of your revolver in the middle of the screen. As you move, your revolver rotates clockwise or counterclockwise. Shooting at enemies depends on the bullets you have in your chambers. Guncho is a solid game that takes a few runs to get used to. Things can get pretty tough once you get past the first couple stages. Not only are you strategizing each move you make, you are keeping an eye on how many bullets you have left, which direction they are pointing, the enemy’s attacks, and the environment. Each move that you make is a matter of life or death. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Guncho so far, but it does come with some flaws. A lot of the issues are mainly due to its onboarding. Like, I have no clue if there is any sort of progression in the game or you are just replaying each run over and over in the hopes of beating the boss at the end. It would be nice to know if my character is getting stronger or learning more as I play. I also don’t know what the full game IAP unlocks. The game seems pretty complete as it is. So, letting me know what I’m missing if I don’t unlock the full game should be added. Regardless, Guncho is still a really fun game with an awesome Western theme. If you’re a fan of turn-based games, I highly recommend this one.
