(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Fish Hero is a rage-gritting platformer game that was recently released on the App Store by Mode24. The game has you controlling a fish out of water as you try to flop from platform to platform to reach the end of the level. You (usually) start off at the bottom of a level with the goal to reach the top by any means necessary. The on-screen controls albeit a bit wonky, work well enough to not piss you off too much. You have a joystick to control the camera, a button to “flop”, a checkpoint button, with pullback slingshot mechanics being your main focus. I found the flop button to be my best friend in this game due to the slingshot method being a bit confusing depending on where the camera is at the moment. Fish Hero is kind of a cross between the games Getting Over It and Only Up. There’s a lot of risk taking and a hell of a lot to lose if you screw up. The checkpoint system is a big help when it works, but I wouldn’t rely too heavily on it. There were a few times where I hit the button to save my progress and it ended up bringing me all the way back to my previous checkpoint, forcing me to lose whatever progress that I had gained. Fish Hero may not be the most polished title out there. But, outside of a handful of rage-quits (mainly due to my own mistakes), I’ve been having a good time with it.
