(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Nimble Quest (by Nimblebit) originally released on the App Store back in 2013 and quickly became one of my favorite games. It was a unique mixture of the classic Snake game and an RPG. Unfortunately, like most games, it was pulled from the digital storefront sometime in the last 10 years. To my surprise, the game recently popped back up on the App Store under the name Nimble Quest+. I was naïvely hoping that the “+” symbol meant that it was a premium version or maybe some extra content was added to the game? Maybe? Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. As far as the game itself goes, it’s the same great gameplay from 10+ years ago. That simple swipe mechanic with tons of unique characters and power-ups to unlock. The nostalgia was hitting hard…..until I noticed that I only had 1 hour of “free” playtime before I had to sign up for Halfbrick’s subscription service. It’s a shame because Nimble Quest is an iOS classic and I would love to see a new generation enjoying this gem. But I can’t justify paying $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year to play a game. Even if that subscription lets you play some of Hatlfbrick’s other games. What if I didn’t like their other games? (I actually do) That’s quite a bit for one game. I understand that developers need to eat, but this just doesn’t seem like the way to go. At least give people the option to pay for the game as a premium title or throw some ads at the player every so often. Without going into a whole thing about subscription services, I’ll just say that Nimble Quest+ is everything you remember from 2013 and it translates well on our newer devices. The swipe controls are still just as tight and the pixel art visuals look beautiful on our now bigger screens. If anything, it was a short, but great trip down memory lane.
