(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
The Way Home roguelike dungeon crawler that was released in early December (2021) by indie developer Myeongjin Shin of Concode. You play as a can named Cheese as he and his buddy Kevin try to figure out how to get off a mysterious island. This is one of those games that grows on you the more you play it. At first, I thought it was your standard pixel art dungeon crawler. But, once you put some time into it, there’s a lot packed into this little gem. Dungeons are randomly generated, there’s resource collecting, crafting, upgrades, and a lot more. The game plays similar to Archero where your character auto-attacks when standing stationary. Same goes for collecting resources. So, the object is to get through as many dungeons as possible and collect as many resources before you die. Once dead, you use your resources to upgrade the island and craft new weapons so you can get further the next time. Rinse and repeat. The Way Home is a surprisingly fun roguelike with enough content to keep you playing for quite awhile. At the low low price of FREE, I’d definitely say that this game is well worth checking out.
