GPixel is a turn-based racing game that was recently released on the App Store by new developer JesterDay. Exactly what it describes, GPixel is a racing game with turn-based mechanics. At first, I didn’t think something like this was even possible or at least fun, but I was pleasantly surprised with this title. During a race, you and your opponents take turns controlling your vehicle. Your options are going forward, shifting up/down, and a 7 point turning radius. After playing the first few tutorial races, I thought that the game felt a bit easy. But, once the game is done holding your hand, you really start to understand the complexity of each race. Like, as you keep moving forward, your vehicle will automatically upshift, but you can only downshift one gear per turn. This is where things get tricky. Each move you make can have consequences down the road (pun intended). Crashing your vehicle for whatever reason will cause you to lose a turn while your opponents keep going. Things get really tough once you start doing night races or on foggy days when you can’t see the road. I’ve been having a lot of fun with GPixel so far. It’s not the greatest looking game, but the mechanics are unique enough to keep me hooked. As you progress through the game’s World Tour, you’ll unlock new colors and designs for your vehicle and even see how you are doing in the leaderboards. I do wish that there were new vehicles to unlock, but that’s just me. GPixel may not be for everyone, but if you’re a fan of racing games or just want to try out something unique, it’s definitely worth checking out.
