(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Retro Racing 2 (by Mr Qwak Games) is a top-down racing game and sequel to the classic 2012 game with the same name. It’s crazy to think that it’s been 12 years since the first Retro Racing! I remember playing the hell out of that game and still have it on one of my devices today. Real Racing 2 brings everything that made the first game great and somehow improves it. Better visuals, tighter controls, more vehicles, and longer tracks. I will say that there’s a learning curve to this game. Races are fast and frantic, so it’s easy to go from first to last place in the blink of an eye. A lot of tracks took me a couple tries to clinch first place. (The power-ups scattered around each track are absolute game-changers.) I found the track layouts to be way more interesting this time around with shortcuts, water, sand, snow, and more. You can tell a lot of thought went into each and every turn. As you progress, you’ll earn currency that you can use to purchase new vehicles. Each car has its own unique stats and special abilities. I almost wish that you could upgrade vehicles though. I found myself really liking the auto-repair ability on the blue car, but it’s a slower vehicle that unfortunately won’t win you too many races. That’s all part of the charm of this game though. Picking your vehicle involves just as much strategy as the racing. All in all, I’ve been having a great time with Retro Racing 2! You can almost feel the love that was put into this game when you play. 12 years is a long time, but it’s been worth the wait in my opinion. If you’re a fan of racing games, definitely check this one out!
