(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Astral Hunter is a shooter-style roguelike that was recently released on the App Store by Chinese developer Likaixin. The game is simple and to the point with the main goal being to last as long as possible before eventually dying. During each run, you’ll earn experience from shooting down enemies. Like with most survival roguelikes, you’ll level-up and earn stackable “chips” (power-ups and weapons) to keep you going. As you progress, you’ll earn “cores” that you can use to permanently upgrade your ship. This is kind of where I started liking the game. There are tons of things to upgrade and even more unique chips to find. Astral Hunter doesn’t bring a whole lot to the genre, but it’s still a pretty fun game. The controls are pretty smooth and there’s enough things to unlock and upgrade to keep you playing for quite a while. There are 40 different achievements to accomplish and going through them all, it looks like there is actually some sort of end-game. Your guess is as good as mine on how long the game is. Regardless, Astral Hunter is a pretty solid little game. If you’re into shooters or roguelikes, this one is worth checking out.
