(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Heroll is a roguelike RPG that was recently released on the App Store by 111%. The game has you playing as a knight as you try to reach the top floor in order to save your destroyed village. Heroll is a fast paced board game-style roguelike. You tap the screen to roll a set of dice as you make your way around the board. Every trip around takes you to a new “floor” with the final floor being on level 30. The object is to eventually play all the way through to reach the final boss in one go. Each run has a randomly generated board full of traps, power-ups, and tons of baddies. Enemies will drop gear that you can equip, making yourself stronger with each fight. As you progress, you’ll be able to permanently upgrade your knight in between runs helping you get a little further with each try. Heroll is a fairly solid game with some simple, but fun mechanics. It’s fast paced with tons of little mini-games and surprises that pop up. That being said, there is something that’s just not clicking with me with this game. With everything going on, I still feel like I’m basically just tapping the “roll” button and the game does the rest. Everything is luck-based. There’s a bit of strategy with choosing which gear to equip after defeating enemies, but that’s about it. Heroll is a game that I feel like I should love, but for some reason I don’t. (And I’m not even knocking it for all the F2P trappings it has.) Regardless, there’s still some fun to be had with Heroll. The pixel art is well done and the game has some fun ideas. It’s definitely worth giving it a try I’d say.
