(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Retro Wings is a top-down shmup game that was recently released on the App Store by Chinese developer OneCoinClear. It’s your standard vertical space shooter with tons of enemies, bullets, and upgrades. Retro Wings doesn’t stray too far from the usual shmup formula and honestly, I’m completely fine with it. Why fix what isn’t broken? During the first few levels, I was completely in love with this game. The touchscreen controls are super tight with a really punchy feel when shooting down enemies. The chunky voxel art looked absolutely beautiful with some really unique enemy ships. Unfortunately, Retro Wings suffers from the usual F2P mobile monetization. Some of it can be fun. There are daily missions and rewards to complete and tons of ships and drones to unlock. The downside is just all the extras thrown at you. Daily attendance rewards, random gacha drone/fighter capsules, shards to collect, a monthly subscription to remove ads, and an absolute ton of IAPs. Some of that can be ignored, but the game of course has the usual “energy system” implemented. So, you can only play so many times before you have to wait (or pay). Retro Wings is another good game that is hampered by a greedy ecosystem. There is definitely some fun to be had here. Unfortunately, it feels like you won’t get very far without paying up.

Experience thrilling, sweat-inducing battles! Unleash your relentless spirit, defeat every enemy, and compete on the global leaderboard! Key Features:
▶ Adrenaline-pumping action! Hardcore bullet-hell chaos.
