Mage Train iOS SNAPP Review!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Mage Train is an auto-battler roguelike that was recently released on the App Store by developer Ben Dressler. The game has you controlling a band of heroes as you take on waves of enemies in a procedurally generated campaign. Those of you familiar with the old NimbleQuest game, will feel right at home with Mage Train. You control your crew similar to the old Snake game. I absolutely loved NimbleQuest, so I was excited for this one. I’ll say up front that I really do like this game…….BUT! I do have some issues with it. Most of Mage Train is great. You earn experience and level up your characters, earn coins and unlock new heroes, and the randomly generated campaign tree is nice. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a fan of basically losing everything once you die. Regardless of how far you get, you always start back at the beginning of the game. You also lose all your experience that your heroes have gained. The only permanent progression in the game are the new characters that you unlock. That being said, outside of the first couple characters, most of them are hard to obtain due to losing all your currency every run. Mage Train is a good game that just needs a few tweaks to be great. I still think it’s worth your time to at least check out. Especially with NimbleQuest being locked behind Halfbrick’s subscription service.
