Mars Defense iOS SNAPP Review!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

It’s been a slow week so far, but I did run across this one that’s not too bad. Mars Defence (Defense) is a castle defense roguelike that was recently released on the App Store by developer Maxim Ivanov. The game has you trying to build up a settlement on the planet Mars within 25 days. You start off the game with a limited amount of resources needed to build your defenses. Each day will bring a new wave of enemies heading towards your settlement. The defense portion of the game is pretty standard fair. You build and upgrade towers in designated spots. But, at the end of each day, you’ll need to decide whether to use your resources to build towers for the next run, or work on your settlement which can grant you more resources in the long run. It’s all about finding the right because once the enemy destroys your settlement, you lose all progress and need to start over. Thankfully, you can earn permanent progress points that you can use for future runs. Mars Defense is a solid little roguelike with a cool art style. My only real issue is that the game runs hot on the iPhone 12 that I was running it on. I’m not sure if it’s a device specific issue or an all around bug. Regardless, I’ve had some fun with the game so far. Mars Defense may not have a ton of polish, but if you’re into the genre, it may be worth checking out.
