(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Beam On: A Star Forest Quest is a Flappy Bird-style endless arcade game that was recently released on the App Store by developer Star Forest. The game has you playing as Twig, a bearded dragon that’s on his way to reclaim a guitar star called Unicus. Beam On plays a lot like most Flappy-like games. You simply tap the screen to keep Twig in the air. You’ll also be able to use your glide ability to get through twisty caverns by holding your thumb on the screen. It’s a pretty basic mechanic, but it’s done pretty well in this game. As you progress, you’ll complete challenges to unlock new outfits for your character. Beam On has a ton of charm with unique characters and a beautiful pixel art environment. My only real issue is that there isn’t much to play for outside of a high score and a few outfits. With the game being endless, I would’ve liked to have seen some more unlockables. you need that “carrot on a stick” to keep you playing. Because after a handful of runs, things started to feel repetitive. Regardless, Beam On is a solid arcade game with a good amount of polish. There’s still some fun to be had with it, so I’d recommend giving it a try.
