(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Neon Spellstorm is an action roguelite game that was recently released on the App Store under TopCog. It’s a survival-style game that has you playing as a wizard while taking down waves of enemies while trying to survive the onslaught. Similar to others in the genre, Neon Spellstorm auto-attacks while you use the v-stick to move around. As you kill enemies, you’ll unlock different spells and upgrades that you can use to beef yourself up. (You know how these games play by now.) Survival roguelikes are really popular at the moment, so there is a ton of competition out there. What sets Neon Spellstorm apart is first off, the visuals. I absolutely love the low-poly cyberpunk art style in this game. Second, is the amount of spells and trinkets that you can combine and chain together. There are so many unique builds that you can come up with. Lastly, it’s a paid/premium title so there are no timers, IAPs, or F2P shenanigans going on. That being said, I’m still on the fence with this game. The controls are a bit stiff (a recent update made the controls a little better thankfully) and the spells/upgrades are a bit confusing at times. The biggest thing that bugs me is that your character doesn’t “feel” any different when equipping new spells/upgrades. Even though my stats were increased, the gameplay still felt the same to me for some reason. Neon Spellstorm may not be clicking with me at the moment, but it’s still a solid roguelite at its core. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s definitely worth checking out.
