(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
The Greater Good is a turn-based RPG the recently released on the App Store by indie developer Sam Enright. You play as a young soldier that teams up with a band of unlikely heroes to take revenge on the Evil King. It’s an intriguing story that’s very well written and witty at times. As far as gameplay goes, I was actually surprised at how much I liked it. In between battles, the game plays like an action/adventure side-scroller. There’s no random encounters that pop up and annoy you. If you see an enemy that you don’t want to fight, you just jump over them. So, you’re free to explore and play the game how you want. The controls are simple with a v-stick to move around and a couple buttons. My only real issue was the lack of an auto-save. You have to save at designated “save points”. Luckily, there is no shortage of places to save, so it’s ended up not bothering me in the long run. I honestly can’t say enough good things about The Greater Good. The visuals are stunning and the soundtrack is just as beautiful. The Greater Good is a unique twist of old school RPGs with modern mechanics and I have been loving every minute of it! It’s hard to believe that all of this was created by one person. Do yourself a solid and pick this gem up.
