Retro Drive iOS SNAPP REVIEW!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Retro Drive is an arcade racing game that recently released on the App Store by the team at Retro Drive Studio. At first glance, I was half expecting Retro Drive to be just your average 80’s themed endless racer. You tend to see a lot of those games pass through the App Store. Retro Drive couldn’t be further from average though. There’s a full story where you play as a college kid that’s trying to catch up with his friends who are already out partying. In between each level, you’ll learn more of the story through cut scenes. The tracks themselves are really well designed. The first couple levels feel a bit easy, but things start picking up around the third level. As far as the driving goes, your vehicle accelerates on its own while you tap the left and right side of the screen to turn and the bottom of the screen to brake/reverse. You can also hit the turbo by tapping on your car. The object is to get through each track with the best time in order to get 3 stars. Other vehicles on the road and different obstacles will slow you down, so things can get a bit tricky in the later levels. There’s also coins on the road that you can use to purchase new vehicles. Retro Drive is a really cool little arcade racer with a ton of polish. The visuals are rad and the synthwave soundtrack is totally bitchin. The game may be a little on the short side, but it’s definitely worth playing through!
