Slimes & Monsters is the sequel to developer Monte and Harry Boyd’s 2019 game, Knights & Slimes. Those of you that haven’t played, Slimes & Monsters is a side scrolling action platformer with beautifully chunky pixel art. The story goes that the Outer Isles have been overrun by……well, monsters and slimes. And it’s your job to clear them out. The game definitely feels like it takes inspiration from the classic game, Slayin. You’re basically scrolling left and right while running your sword into enemies. Baddies will sometimes split into several entities once hit, giving you the chance to rack up combos. S&M does enough different to where it doesn’t feel like a Slayin clone though. There’s platforming, boss fights, and all sorts of upgrades to unlock. There’s also 25 different characters to play with. I do wish that they weren’t all unlocked from the beginning. That’s just my opinion though. It always feels more rewarding when unlocking something rather than it already being available. Regardless, there’s still plenty of things to find. I’ve been really enjoying my time with Slimes & Monsters so far. With randomly generated levels and an Endless Mode, there’s plenty of fun to be had. If you’re a fan of action platformers or liked the first game Slimes & Monsters is definitely worth picking up!
