(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Ronin: The Last Samurai is a roguelike fighting game that was recently released worldwide on the App Store by the team at Dreamotion. You play as a samurai that has just lost the lord he has served for years and is seeking revenge. The game is fairly short on story, but more than makes up for it in visuals and gameplay. Those of you who have played Archero will notice some similarities. Basically, you’re fighting off waves of enemies until your inevitable demise. After that, you’ll upgrade your skills and equipment and start back at the first level. It’s a gameplay mechanic that works, but I would have much rather had a full level-based game. Regardless, I’m still having some fun with The Last Samurai. The fighting is well done with lots of strategy involved and the ink-and-wash painting style is absolutely beautiful to look at. The game is F2P, so you’ll be dealing with an energy timer, multiple currencies, and rare materials for upgrading. So, things can get pretty confusing at times. If you can get past that stuff, Ronin: The Last Samurai has some fun to be had.
