Arcadium: Space War iOS SNAPP REVIEW!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Arcadium: Space War is a vertical SHMUP (shoot em up) by Luciano Bercini that was released last month on the App Store. Uh-oh…. I did it again didn’t I? I’ve been reviewing a lot of shooters lately. Oh well, I’ve already started this one. Anyway, Arcadium is an endless survival game where you are put up against waves of enemies. As you progress, you’ll level-up and be able to choose from several different power-ups similar to the Archero genre that’s popular right now. Power-ups are stackable, but you lose them after each run. Luckily, you get to keep your bits and gems that you collect while playing. This is when things get interesting. Bits are similar to gold. You can use them to purchase new skills or buy chests in the shop. Gems are used to purchase and upgrade your ships. And there are 21 different types of gems! Everything is a bit confusing at the start because you’re talking about 22 different currencies, but you get the hang of things after a few runs and it actually adds to the game in my opinion. There’s also a whole gem trading formula that I’m not going to get into. Arcadium is a fun little shooter with solid controls and some great pixel art. I really wish that it had GameCenter leaderboards though. I think that I’d probably be in first place right now. Regardless, if you’re a fan of old school SHMUPS or action games, Arcadium: Space War is well worth your time.
