(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Nuclear Day is a side-scrolling survival game by developer Somnium Fabri. The game has your usual post apocalyptic setting where you are trying to survive after a nuclear explosion. You’ll need to keep an eye on your health, hunger, and thirst while crafting different weapons and armor to stay alive. What I really liked about this game is the gritty 2D art and side scrolling camera angle. It heavily reminded me of games like This War of Mine and Sheltered. Nuclear Day really makes you feel like you’re trying to survive. There’s tons of dangers that await around every corner and consequences for almost every action. It’s a pretty solid survival game that I feel would’ve been better as a paid “premium” game. “Tickets” are your main form of currency in Nuclear Day and they are few and far between. With Nuclear Day being F2P, I can’t help but feel that you are pushed to purchase tickets via IAPs in order to survive at times. Regardless, if that stuff doesn’t bother you, Nuclear Day has the potential to be a pretty good survival game. The core game loop is there. There are plenty of places to explore, things to craft, and puzzles to solve. It just needs to go back in the oven for a little while and have some things fixed. (Side Note: This is only the demo version at the moment. So things may change in future updates.)
