(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
I’ve been known to glance over games once in a while. When you go through as many games as I do on a daily basis, it’s easy to brush over a game for whatever reason. That’s what almost happened with this game. I originally thought the recently released Darkrise (by Viktor Chokov) was going to be another poorly made pixel art action-platformer. I tend to run across them a lot on the App Store. But Darkrise is much more than that. The story is pretty standard stuff. Your hero’s homeland has been invaded by ghouls & goblins and your job is to rid the land of these enemies. What makes this game good is the sheer amount of depth in its mechanics. There’s 4 different classes to choose from each with their own unique gameplay, there’s tons of weapons/armor/loot, upgrades, a massive skill tree to work through, and a lot more. Darkrise is a full RPG packed in a side scrolling setting. The on-screen controls aren’t amazing, but work well enough. Things get a little tight when playing on an iPhone. Especially once you start unlocking new abilities and have a bunch of buttons that you need to use. Of course, Darkrise is F2P, so you have coins and gems as currency. There are IAPs for both of them, but I haven’t really felt the need for either of them. (We’ll see later on in the game.) There’s also an IAP to remove ads, but after a couple hours of playing, I’ve yet to run across any. Darkrise is a really deep RPG with some well done pixel art and a fairly good soundtrack. There are a ton of places to explore and all sorts of baddies to kill. Sure, I would’ve rather it been a paid game, but for what it is, Darkrise is a solid RPG that’s definitely worth checking out!
