(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Shadow of the Orient is a pixel art side scroller that was recently released in the App Store by Spacelab Games. You play as a lone samurai as you try to save the children from an ancient evil that has taken over the east. It’s not a very deep story, but I appreciate the effort put into it. As far as the gameplay goes, Shadow of the Orient is a pretty solid action platformer. The level design is well done with multiple ways to reach the end of each level. I will say that the game is pretty tough at times. Enemies are quick and have their own unique patterns. I found myself really struggling in the beginning. The on-screen controls work well enough, but when you’ve got a bunch of enemies on the screen, you’ve got to be quick with your thumbs. Like I said, Shadow of the Orient is a pretty solid game. It’s a bit short at only 15 levels, but there’s also a Challenge Mode with an additional 5 mini-games. The pixel art and character design is really well done and I absolutely love the ancient Japanese theme. I highly recommend playing with a controller if you have one (just due to the difficulty at times), but if not Shadow of the Orient is still worth checking out!
