Project MOLD iOS SNAPP Review!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Project MOLD is an action-RPG that was recently released on the App Store by new developer Lagrange Studios. The game has you playing an unnamed powerhouse as you make your way through dark corridors fighting hordes of monsters. The App Store isn’t short of top down RPGs, so I wasn’t expecting much when firing this game up. But, Project MOLD really surprised me. Sure, the visuals aren’t the greatest and I was getting sick of seeing the same gray walls as I moved from room to room, but there’s quite a bit of depth to this game. The campaign has branching paths that you can take with different character upgrades depending on which path you choose. Project MOLD is essentially a roguelike, so if you die before making it all the way through the ship you are exploring, it’s game over. As you progress, you’ll earn buffs to make you stronger, helping you on your next run. Project MOLD is a pretty impressive game for a fairly new studio. Even though I’m not a big fan of games with multiple on-screen buttons, moving around and fighting felt pretty smooth. I would’ve liked to have seen a little more variety in the environments and enemy types. Things start to feel a bit same-y after a while. Regardless, Project MOLD is a solid ARPG with some good ideas. If you’re looking for a new roguelike, this one might be up your alley.
