(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Flat Machine is another odd little adventure game that was recently released on the App Store by Zxima. In this post apocalyptic story, you play as a gatekeeper that is guarding one of the last settlements. As the days pass, you will be met with all sorts of characters. During these encounters, you’ll need to make decisions that are best for yourself or the settlement. You and the settlement both have a hit point gauge. So, if an enemy walks up, fighting them will most likely cause your HP to drop, while letting them pass and wreak havoc will cause the settlement’s HP to drop. It’s all about finding balance. Fighting is as simple as watching a marker move back and forth and tapping on the screen at the right time. As you progress, enemies will drop useful power-ups and merchants will sell you items to help you make it through the 69 days it takes to finish the story. There’s also a bit of roguelike mechanics thrown in for good measure. Being killed on duty will start the game over at day one. Everything that you’ve accumulated is lost, with the exception of your experience earned. This is just a piece of this weird little game. There’s also combat training, random encounters, and all sorts of odd things. Even though I’ve spent a lot of time asking myself “WTF is going on here?!”, I’ve still had a lot of fun with this game. Flat Machine is a quirky little gem that does a good job keeping you interested. If you’re looking for something a little different, Flat Machine is worth checking out.
