(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Gears Forever is the spiritual successor of the original Gears game released by Crescent Moon way back in the early days of the App Store. For those of you that never played the first game, Gears Forever is a steampunk-style ball rolling platformer. You control the ball by sliding your thumb in the direction you want to go. The quicker you slide your thumb, the faster the ball rolls. It sounds easy on virtual paper, but the game does take some getting used to. Levels can be really tricky and will take a steady hand to make it through. As you make your way through each level, you’ll pick up clocks that’ll give you extra time and gears that you can use to purchase new and uniquely shaped balls. I’ve really been loving Gears Forever so far. The controls are super tight and the level design is really well done even adding some puzzle elements into runs. What you see is what you get with this game. Gears Forever is just a solid platformer without a bunch of fluff. It can be frustrating and fun at the same time. Do yourself a favor and get the “remove ads” IAP though. I found myself getting annoyed at times when I was stuck in a tough spot and an ad would pop up after a few deaths. Regardless, Gears Forever is a great game and a beautiful trip down memory lane for some. “Roll” over to the App Store and pick this one up!
