Shovel Pirate iOS SNAPP Review!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Shovel Pirate is a pixel art platformer and the newest game by Neutronized to hit the App Store. The game is a level-based side scroller where you play as a cute little pirate as you use your shovel to find diamonds and whack enemies. Similar to Gionathan’s other games, the pixel art visuals are really well done and the soundtrack is catchy. The on-screen controls are pretty tight as you jump onto platforms and smack snakes with your trusty shovel. What stuck out the most with me was the level design in this game. Every level feels like it’s introducing something new. Flinging rocks at mice, knocking heads off of skeletons, and switching behind obstacles are only a few of the game’s tricks. Shovel Pirate is a solid platformer that feels just as polished as a Mario game. Unfortunately, your fun ends fairly quickly with the whole game only adding up to 15 levels. Regardless, for a couple bucks, Shovel Pirate is a fun game that is worth “digging” into your wallet for.
