(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
The Rise of Abeloft is a side-scrolling action-platformer that was recently released on the App Store by developer FrodoUndead! In this game a dragon has attacked the village and of course, it is up to you to save everyone. Now, I’ve been going back and forth with this game. At first, I didn’t like it. The game is kind of promotional material for a metal band called Gamma Hammer. We’ve seen these “games” on the App Store many times over the years. But, the more I played, the more I started to like The Rise of Abeloft. Sure, it’s not perfect. The camera system is a bit odd. Sometimes it’s in constant movement, sometimes it follows the character. The controls are also a bit stiff, but I eventually started to look over that stuff. The level design is fairly good and there is a unique “battery” mechanic that you need to keep an eye on as you attack enemies. As you progress, you’ll earn coins that you can use for new spells and to upgrade your health and battery. Unfortunately, if you die during a level, you lose a big chunk of treasure that you accumulated. So, spend it if you have it! The Rise of Abeloft may not be the most polished game out there, but it has some bones to it. The game may be a bit difficult for some players, but if you’re into old school side scrollers, The Rise of Abeloft is pretty fun. The Gamma Hammer soundtrack isn’t that bad either!
