(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Pearl’s Odyssey is a pixel art RPG that was recently released on the App Store by developer TouchManage Games. In this game you take control of a young villager as you go out on a journey to find some mysterious pearls. Now, I’ve only spent a few hours with Pearl’s Odyssey so far and I have a love/hate relationship with it already. On a positive note, the game is absolutely beautiful. The pixel art is well done, there’s a charming cast of characters, and the overall theme is great. I really wanted to sink into this game………unfortunately, the ads are way too intrusive. Anytime you walk into a structure or different area, you are greeted with up to a 30 second ad. This may work with some games, but with RPGs like this where you are exploring and going in and out of areas, you end up watching ads more than playing. Outside of the ad issue, I found that the on-screen controls were a bit small on the iPhone. I also had an issue in the beginning where my sword never showed up in my inventory. I ended up having to start a whole new game to fix the issue. It’s a shame because Pearl’s Odyssey is a pretty solid RPG. I just wish there was a paid version or an IAP to get rid of the ads. But, if you’re a fan of old-school RPGs and are a bit patient, Pearl’s Odyssey could be worth your time.
