Dragon Pow iOS SNAPP Review!

(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)

Dragon Pow! is a casual Shmup/RPG that was recently released on the App Store by Boltray Games. The game has you going after the Demon Lord due to him stealing your precious sword. There’s also a “save the world from evil” type of story mixed in to boot. I have some mixed feelings about this game.  As far as the core game loop goes, Dragon Pow is a really solid shmup with some unique shooting mechanics. The controls are tight and the visuals are absolutely beautiful. I mean, the game looks like it’s straight out of a cartoon with some really cool character design. Each run plays similar to the many survival games that flood the App Store at the moment. You fight off a wave of enemies, pick one of three power-ups, and keep stacking until you defeat the boss or die. It’s a decent system, but is definitely overdone. If the game stayed at that, I’d be fine with it, but unfortunately Dragon Pow shoehorns the usual tropes that come with most casual F2P games. We’re talking three different currencies for the core game, four different currencies for “wishes” (summons), energy timers, timed events, and a TON of other stuff including like 20 different IAPs. Normally, I don’t even bother reviewing these types of games. They just aren’t my cup of tea. But, I was kind of excited for this one when I first saw screenshots of it a couple months ago. It’s a shame. Dragon Pow is actually a solid arcade-y shmup at its core. There’s just too much fluff to keep in on my device.
