(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Lunar Knight is a roguelike RPG that was recently released on the AppStore by developer BunMuen. The game has you taking control of a pixel art hero as travel from room to room fighting off waves of enemies. At first glance, Lunar Knight felt like your regular old roguelike. The core game loop is similar to most in the genre, but the more I played this game, the more it started to impress me. From the beautiful cutscenes, to the creative level design, there’s just so much polish to this game. Dungeons are randomly generated with branching paths with their own bosses. As you progress, you’ll earn new skills and pick up coins that carry over when you die. Coins can be used to level up things like your HP, attack strength, and more. Lunar Knight isn’t all unicorns and rainbows though. With the game being free to play, it comes with the usual tropes. Two different currencies, a battle pass, and worst of all, an energy system that limits you to around 7 runs before you have to wait for things to recharge. I would’ve loved to have seen this as a paid game, but I understand and I feel that things are pretty fair considering. Regardless, Lunar Knight is a really solid roguelike with a cast of charming characters and a decent amount of content to keep you busy. If you’re a fan of the genre, definitely check this one out!
