(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Kyra’s Light is an endless runner/roguelike by Raviosoft that was recently released on the App Store. The game has you taking control of a squirrel knight as you attempt to get as far away as possible from a giant troll that is trying to kill you. Kyra’s Light is a tile-based game with 3 buttons for moving forward, attacking, and defending. As you tap your way forward, you’re met with enemies and traps that need to be timed correctly to survive. It’s not a new mechanic, but it works well in this game. There’s also a bit of roguelike elements giving you one of three upgrades to choose when you reach a new area. As you progress, you’ll pick up coins and gems that you can use to purchase new weapons. Kyra’s Light is a decent title with a pretty fun game loop. The controls are tight and there are plenty of new weapons and utilities to grind for. The game just feels like it’s missing something. With only a high score to shoot for, the game desperately needs GameCenter leaderboards. But there’s something else still missing to me. Regardless, I’ve been still having some fun with Kyra’s Light. If you’re looking for a new time killer, this one is worth checking out.
