(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Willy’s Wonderland is a movie tie-in fighting game by Mito Games and QUByte Game Studio. To be honest, I hadn’t heard of the WW movie until the game came out yesterday. With Nick Cage starring, I’m actually excited to see it! Anyway, about the game. Willy’s Wonderland is a pretty standard side-scrolling fighting game. You basically play as the Janitor or Liv as you fight your way through 7 different levels. Each level has you button mashing your way through multiple henchmen until you meet up with that level’s boss. Controls are fine enough. You have a punch, kick, block, and jump button along with a few special moves. The joystick works similar to games like Streets of Rage where you can move 360 degrees around the area. There’s not much else to the game outside of what you see in the screenshots. There’s nothing to unlock or upgrade, no extra bells and whistles. The visuals are also pretty muddy looking. Regardless, the fighting is actually pretty fun. I had a good time beating down hordes of animatronics. It’s not a very long game, but it’s not bad for a movie tie-in. You can tell that the developer put some effort into the game. I appreciate Willy’s Wonderland being a paid game and not having a ton of stuff locked behind a bunch of IAPs. They could’ve easily gone that route. I just wish there were a little more to the game outside of the 7 levels.
