(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Jett Rider is an action-shooter game by Last Chicken Games that released last month on the eShop under the JanduSoft umbrella. In this game you play as Jett. A “Space Sweeper” that was sent to pick up a wrecked ship, but finds out that someone or something else is trashing the planet Gravos. Jett Rider is a mixed bag of genres. At its core, it’s a shooter, but there’s also platforming, puzzles, a bit of spelunking, and a few surprises. The game’s main objective is finding space trash and carrying it to recycle centers. As you make your way across the planet, you’ll find new weapons that you can equip and upgrade in shops scattered around. There’s a bit of strategy involved when equipping weapons. Some enemies can only be killed a certain way or key items might be hidden in areas that need a select weapon to get to them. Killing enemies earns you experience and cash that you can use to upgrade your gear, so I found myself doing a lot of grinding just for fun. Jett Rider starts off slow and even felt a little repetitive in the beginning. But, once I sunk a little time into it and unlocked a few weapons, the game really started to blossom. The controls are tight, the pixel art is well done, and the writing is actually pretty funny. I will say that the trash/recycling thing can be a chore at times, but it wasn’t enough to steer me away from the game. If you’re looking for a new side scrolling shooter, Jett Rider is a solid choice for the price.
