(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Block Wars 2D is a vertical SHMUP (shoot em’ up) style game that recently released on the App Store by indie developer TMD Studios. At first glance, Block Wars may look like just your standard old school shooter, but it’s actually fairly unique! Colored blocks drop from the top of the screen as you try to shoot them down. Changing the color of your ship helps shoot down blocks easier. The blocks that get past you end up stacking at the bottom of the screen. So, there’s this cool bit of stress added to the game besides just shooting blocks. Throw in some power-ups and boss fights and Block Wars is actually a really fun game! My only issue is that the game is shrunk to about half the size of the screen on the iPhone 11. It plays fine on the iPad, so I’m sure it’s just a bug that’ll hopefully be fixed. Sure, the game may be a little rough around the edges, but Block Wars is still a unique little shooter with some pretty decent controls and of course, GameCenter leaderboards. Definitely keep your eye out on this game. And if you’re at all a fan of shooters, you should be playing it now.
