(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really full-fledged game reviews as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. Usually we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know if it’s worth your time or money.)
Max Countercoup is a top-down shooter that was released on the App Store late last year by developer Derailed. The game has you playing as an assassin as you themake your way through buildings and corridors while killing the military opposition. Max Countercoup is fun, but its biggest thing is how brutally difficult the game is. There is no margin for error. Each level has you clearing out a building full of enemies. Unfortunately for you, it’s one-shot kills. So, the slightest mistake will have you starting the level over. This causes you to learn the behaviors of your enemies and look for any kind of patterns. As you progress, you’ll earn cash that you can use to purchase and upgrade new weapons and skills. Max Countercoup is a fast-paced action game that will really test your anger issues. But, if you can get past the difficulty, there’s definitely some fun to be had here. The controls work fairly well and there’s quite a bit to unlock. My only issue is that you can’t earn any currency unless you pass a level. So, I found myself grinding the same levels that I could beat over and over to earn money for upgrades. Regardless, if you’re a fan of games like Hotline Miami, this one may be worth checking out.
